As long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by history. From an early age, I understood that the present cannot be fully appreciated without an understanding of the past.
My studies in Art History heightened my awareness of the transience of the world around me. And as I explored the works of artists from different periods and traditions, I was inspired to begin recording my own observations through painting and drawing.
Observation lies at the heart of my practice. I often take my oil paints into remote fields as well as into busy city streets. Working directly from life encourages a spontaneous and intuitive approach. In the studio, however, I refine my work by using academic traditions, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. It is in the dialogue between these two approaches (impressionistic fieldwork and disciplined studio practice) that my work finds its character.
Strasbourg
Strasbourg has attracted me for its rich multicultural history and international atmosphere. The constant presence of (and sometimes tension between) Alsacien, French, German and international elements are a big inspiration for an artist inspired by history and changes.
